Description

SMART HATCHERY was a two-year project funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), aimed at increasing the profitability of aquaculture farmers by reducing feeding process costs during the early rearing stages and transition to formulated diets. At the same time, the project sought to improve the quality of feed and cultivation water, providing a high-quality and safe marine product with the best organoleptic and nutritional values.

Tangible results

The project developed smartFEESh, an automated and centralized feeding and management system for all stages of marine fish larvae production. This system is based on innovative digital technologies such as cloud computing, the internet, and artificial intelligence, significantly increasing efficiency in co-feeding (combination of live feed and formulated diets), reducing waste, improving water quality, lowering stress levels and disease susceptibility, and ultimately enhancing the well-being of aquatic species.

Additionally, the project developed WINFEEDS, a new generation of dry microfeeds designed based on nutritional knowledge (premium-quality ingredients that meet the nutritional requirements of larvae) and cutting-edge technologies (cold extrusion and encapsulation, leveraging pharmaceutical expertise). These feeds have low leaching and high stability in water, maximizing larvae performance and well-being.

Application/Relevance

The project transforms European aquaculture into a cutting-edge, more sustainable, and efficient activity. It represents the first technology capable of providing an automated and centralized feeding and management system for all stages of marine fish and shrimp larvae production at an industrial scale.
